Will your iOS app still be in the App Store when iOS 11 arrives?

The iOS 11 release is around the corner. The 19th of September iOS 11 will be available for the public!

More than 200.000 iOS apps stop working in iOS 11. The thing is they will also get kicked out of the App Store! No more installs from iOS 11 users.

Apple has removed the 32bit compatibility and will only support 64bit apps from now on. But I won’t bore you with those technical details. 😉

It’s insane how many investments will become “worthless”. On average an app costs around 5k. This is really the low end to be honest. It’s probably more between 10 and 20k. Anyway lets do the watered down math here.

€ 5.000 x 200.000 = € 1.000.000.000

Wait what? 1 billion euros will get squandered.

That is INSANE!

Hopefully your app isn’t one of them. Here is how you can check it for yourself on your iPhone or iPad.

In iOS 10:

  • Make sure your app is on your device
  • Open up the Settings app
  • Go to General and then About
  • Tap Applications
  • There will be a list with the following caption: “These apps may slow down your iPhone and will not work with future versions of iOS if they are not updated. If no update is available, contact the app developer for more information”
  • If your app is listed here it will get removed if not you’re golden!

In iOS 11:

  • Open the App Store on your iOS 11 device
  • Search for your app
  • If it shows up it still works if not your app is not compatible with iOS 11

My app is not compatible 🙁 what do I do now?

Obviously this is not the end 🙂 The app can, in most cases, be updated. And! There’s still time. The adoption rate of iOS 10 was around 80% in 3 to 4 months.

The app will still be on the device of the user as long as it’s not manually deleted. So you still have an opportunity to update your app.

Make sure you contact your developer about this or we can take a look at it and fix it for you.

Lets make sure your investment is working for you again!
